Episode 54 - Five G and the AI-AR-VR Connection

Aaron and I discuss 5G and what that means for mobile tech in the 2020s, as well as augmented reality, virtual reality, mesh networks, gaming, and self driving cars.

Articles and Notes

The New York Times on 5g
Increased mobile internet speeds (~20x faster out the gate?)

  • Apple not joining in until 2020, why?

  • Reduced latency (1-2 orders of magnitude)

  • Applications for connected cars? Are they talking about offloading the computation to remote processors?  This is mildly concerning

  • Phased rollout, most of us in 2019Q2

      • all major carriers: Verizon, At&T sprint.. Not exactly at the same time

  • Makes use of millimeter wave frequencies >> higher bandwidth but shorter range (also uses some lower frequencies)

  • Core switching not expected to transition until late 2019 or 2020

  • Not all 5G phones will be compatible with all 5G networks/frequencies (sounds like a rollout fail)
